Japan
I chose to study Japan because my ancestors, on my dad's side, came from Japan. While studying Japan, I completed a timeline of the country's history, and I learned many interesting statistics. I also studied important figures of Japan. One important person from Japan that caught my eye was Hayao Miyazaki. He is a world famous animator. Another Japanese figure I looked at was Midori Ito. She was a world class figure skater. I also looked up information on Tetsuya Kumakawa, who was a beautiful dancer.
While studying Japan, I learned about the culture, and I made a couple of maps. Here is my physical map, my political map, and my population map. I made a graph of the area of Japan compared to the US, a graph of the literacy rate of Japan to US, and a graph of the population of Japan compared to the US. I made a powerpoint of some of my discoveries. I added some Japanese recipes, too, in case you'd like to try some original food. I also created an itinerary of seven places to go if you ever visit Japan!

I enjoyed working on this project. My favorite part was probably learning the technological parts of the project such as how to scan things in to the computer, how to upload a Powerpoint to a website, and how to make graphs online. I prefer an electronic portfolio compared to the three ring binder because it’s easier to add or remove or change things in it that way. Nothing’s set in stone. Originally I picked Japan to study because my Grandfather comes from Japan. I am one quarter Japanese. Even though I am part Japanese, there’s still much I don’t know. I was surprised to learn that mochi is not an every day food in Japan. I was also surprised to learn baseball is the most popular sport. Next year, I think it would be nice if the project didn’t consist of as many essays.
